Burke Bio

Education

Hello my name is Rebecca Burke.  I am an alumni of Horn Lake High c/o 99.  After high school I attended Northwest Community College and then moved to University of Mississippi where I received my B.A.  My major is History but I also carry a minor in English and Sociology.  After I graduated from U of M in 2009 with a 3.23 GPA I decided I wanted to be a teacher.  I entered into the TMI (Teach Mississippi Institute) program and graduated from their soon after.  Once I successfully completed the program I became an educator for DeSoto County.  I spent 8 years teaching History at DCAC and then moved to SHS where I teach English.

Experience

This is my 4th year at SHS.  Go Chargers!  This year will be my 13th year to teach in DeSoto County.  Before I became a DeSoto County teacher I coached dance for 12 years in the county.  I worked under Tina Streeter at Horn Lake High School where I coached the JV dance team and assisted with the Varsity team for 4 years.  My next coaching position was at Olive Branch high school.  I was a head coach under the sponsorship of Vicki Morris. I worked there for 7 years.  During my time at Olive Branch I led the dance team to 7 consecutive state championships and 3 national championships.  As a coach I taught much more than just dance.  We focused on life skills and values like being responsible, respectful, having determination, and how to set goals and achieve them. I plan teaching these same values in my classroom.  This is my 3rf year coaching SHS Varsity Dance Team and I hope to lead the team to the top. #TheWorkIsWorthIt
